The University of Victoria Vikes cross country and track team are pleased to announce the commitment of Elise Coates, Alex Farlinger, Ryan Heroux and Sajjan Sarai for the 2019-20 season.
“We are very excited to welcome these young recruits to our team,” said Vikes head coach Brent Fougner. “They all are capable of having an immediate impact on our team both in cross country and indoor track. We are looking forward to watching them develop over the next five years.”
Eighteen-year-old Elise Coates will join the Vikes from Nanaimo, B.C. and is soon to be a graduate of Wellington Secondary. Coates was named the 2018 Nanaimo Track and Field Club Outstanding Off Track Female Athlete of the Year. Coates finished in first place at both the 2018 Vikes Invitational and Vancouver Island Cross Country Championships.
“I am extremely excited for the opportunity to compete with the Vikes next year,” said Coates. “I still feel I have a lot to learn when it comes to competitive running so I can’t wait to be able to race and learn along so many experienced athletes and coaches. It has always been a dream of mine to combine academics and athletics at the post-secondary level. I can’t think of a better place to live out that dream than at UVic.”
Alex Farlinger will make the move from the mainland to the island next year to begin his career as a Vike. The long-distance runner from West Vancouver specializes in the 1500-metre, 3000-metre and cross country events. Farlinger competed for both Vancouver Secondary School and the Hershey Harriers Athletics Club, winning a silver medal at the 2018 Cross Country Club Championships and a bronze in the 1500-m event at the 2018 Track and Field Club Championships. The 18-year old Vancouver native plans to pursue a career in computer science.
“To say that I am excited to join the Vikes next year would be an understatement,” commented Farlinger. “The inclusive nature of the team and the hardworking attitude they bring to their practices is something that I am eager to become a part of.”
Ryan Heroux will join the Vikes cross country and track team in the fall when he makes the move to the island from Delta, B.C. Heroux’s specialty races include the 400-m, 800-m and 1500-m events. The middle distance runner finished first in the 800-m at the Richmond finals during the 2017-18 season and also claimed a first-place finish at the B.C. Track and Field Club championships in the 4×400-m event. Heroux will come to the University of Victoria with several individual awards to his name while running at Hugh McRoberts Secondary School, including Male Athlete of the Year in 2017 and 2018. The 18-year old plans to study commerce when he arrives on campus next fall.
“I am very excited to join a team at a school which has such a great environment to both compete and study,” stated Heroux. “I feel this is the perfect opportunity for me to accomplish my goals as a track athlete during my academic career.”
Surrey, B.C. native Sajjan Sarai will also make the move from the mainland to the island to join the Vikes next September. Sarai and Heroux ran together at the Coastal Track Club in Surrey. Sarai recorded personal bests in both the 800-m and 400-m races to finish second at the 2018 Harry Jerome Classic and B.C. High School Championships. In 2019 Sarai finished first in the 600-m event at Harry Jerome Classic. Upon his arrival, next fall, the Earl Marriott graduate plans to study International Relations when he begins his post-secondary studies at UVic.
“I am thrilled to have the chance to run and compete as a Vike,” expressed Sarai. “Their program has produced many high-quality athletes and I am excited for the opportunity to help bring home a few championship banners back to the school. I look forward to starting my training alongside my new teammates in the fall.”
