Jim Swanson, Victoria HarbourCats
It will be another happy bus ride home for the Victoria HarbourCats after taking the rubber match of their three-game series against the Corvallis Knights, 5-0 at Goss Stadium on Monday evening.
With the win, the HarbourCats improve to 31-11 and continue to move closer to clinching the top overall record in the West Coast League.
Monday’s pitching matchup featured right-hander Blake Hannah (UC Davis) making his third start for the HarbourCats, opposed by lefty Cameron Bishop (UC Irvine) in his fifth start for Corvallis. The teams traded wins on Saturday and Sunday in a matchup of the West Coast League first half division pennant winners.
Bishop entered the game with a miniscule 0.41 ERA in 22 innings pitched this summer, but it was the HarbourCats staking themselves to an early lead, scoring three runs on four hits in the top of the second inning. Scoring was highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles by second baseman Ryan Anderson (UC Davis) and shortstop Tommy Jew (UC Santa Barbara) before a single by Jake Stone (Fresno State) drove in Jew to cash the third run of the inning.
The Corvallis right-hander returned to form after the difficult second, holding the HarbourCats scoreless on two hits over the next three innings, finishing with a line of three earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts, not walking a batter in five innings of work.
Victoria padded their lead with two runs in the top of the seventh inning off of right-handed reliever Tanner Howell (Dixie State). Jew scored his second run of the game and was followed by his UC Santa Barbara teammate, centerfielder Matt Lautz to make it 5-0.
On the other side, Hannah was in control from the outset in by far his best start of the season. The sophomore-to-be from UC Davis pitched a season-high 8 innings, shutting out the Knights on just five hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Right-hander Cameron Schneider took the victory to the finish line, working a scoreless inning in the bottom of the ninth.
Hannah earned the win (2-2) for the HarbourCats while Bishop took the loss (1-3) for Corvallis.
The HarbourCats scored their five runs on eight hits, led by Ryan Anderson who was three for three with an RBI and a run scored, and Tommy Jew who went two for three with an RBI and two runs scored.
With the win, Victoria now leads the Yakima Valley Pippins by six games for the WCL’s top overall record, which would secure home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
The HarbourCats now return home to Victoria for a midweek series at Royal Athletic Park against the Walla Walla Sweets on Tuesday through Thursday. In their first meeting, the Sweets handed the HarbourCats a season-opening sweep June 3 to 5 at Borleske Stadium in Walla Walla.
Will McAffer (South Dakota State) is scheduled to make the start on Tuesday for the HarbourCats.
HarbourCats playoff tickets are now on sale to the general public and are being sold as a two-game package.
