Victoria’s Ryan Cochrane failed to advance out of the heats in the 400-metre freestyle event this morning.
He finished in fifth position during the sixth of seven heats with an overall 11th fastest time of 3:45.83.
The final three heats is where we saw all of the finalist qualify, with Jordan Pothain of France in the fifth heat winning and moving on. He qualified with a 3:45.43. During heat six, Sun Yang of China swam a 3:44.23, while American Connor Yaeger finished second to move on with his 3:45.37.
During the seventh heat, the competitors had the advantage of knowing what time standard was now set to move on and they did not fool around with the top-five all qualifying.
Conor Dwyer of the US won the heat in 3:43.42. He was followed to the line by Australian Mack Horton, Gabriele Detti of Italy (3:43.95), David McKeon of Australia (3:44.68) and James Guy competing for Great Britain (3:45.31).
The final will take place at 6:30 PM tonight.
Cochrane, who is a two-time Olympic medallist is known more for his 1500-metre prowess and will very likely make the finals.
