Paddleboard is all the rage in water sports these days and this weekend is a great opportunity to view the sport in a competitive light.

The activity is both a sport and a recreational activity. On any day of the week, year-round, SUPs can be seen dotting the ocean waters around Greater Victoria; it appears to be a leisurely past-time, however, this weekend Sidney will host the national championships.

Athletes will be looking to gain a position on the national team to compete in the 2018 Brazil world stand-up paddle-boarding championships taking place in December.

The sport is being considered for the 2024 Olympics and is an official event in the Pan Am Games.

The men’s and women’s 200-metre sprints and 4K races are happening Saturday from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm. The 18K races will take place on Sunday at 9:30 am.

Beacon Park’s boardwalk will be where the viewing action will take place.
