The University of Victoria men’s golf team will have a bit of catching up to do after Day 1 of the Canadian University/College Golf Championship at Firerock Golf Course in Komoka, Ont. The men’s championship ended in a three-way tie for the lead on the opening day, while the Vikes are currently in eighth.
“The guys got off to a bit of a slow start to their rounds today but turned things around a bit midway through their play,” described Vikes head coach Justin Clews. “Again, our finish was very poor today. What we really need is one or two players to score a low number to vault us up the leaderboard.”
The lowest scoring Vikes for Round 1 were Brandon McManus and Max Murchison who both shot 73 (+1) to sit in a nine-way tie for 23rdspot. John Morrow shot 75 (+3) to sit tied for 38th, while Vikes Josh Miller and Robin Conlan were tied for 48th after both shooting 76 (+4).
“Brandon really played consistent today despite his two bogeys to finish his round,” added Clews on McManus who did not compete at last week’s NAIA National Championship. “It’s nice to see the added depth in our roster this week with Brandon putting in a good score for the team.”
We have a competitive team this week and I know these guys can shoot a low number, so tomorrow we will come out playing hard. Forecast is rain in the morning tomorrow when the men tee off but it should taper off into the day.
A very competitive field of 105 athletes make up the tournament that is led by Michael Harrison of the Augustana Vikings, Jaron Brown of Laurier and Carles Fitzsimmons of Western who all shot 69 (-3).
Playing a mere 15 minutes from their London, Ont. campus, the Mustangs are four strokes ahead of the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks and the Université de Laval Rouge & Or. Western is 2 under par after round one.
“We have a competitive team this week and I know these guys can shoot a low number, so tomorrow we will come out playing hard,” said Clews. “The forecast is rain in the morning tomorrow when the men tee off but it should taper off into the day.
The individual champions in the women’s and men’s competitions receive exemptions into their respective Canadian Amateur Championship.
