The University of Victoria men’s golf team made up a lot of ground on Day 2 of the Canadian University/College Golf Championship at Firerock Golf Course in Komoka, Ont. The Vikes entered the second round in eighth but came out of the day tied for third after improving by 16 strokes as a team.

Vikes rookie and AII Regional Champion Max Murchison shot a 68 to finish Day 2 ranked sixth overall and 1-over-par. First-year Vike Robin Conlan also had a superior second day after improving on his Round 1 score of 76 with a 68 to finish even and tied for 13th.

Vike Josh Miller also improved on Day 2 with a lower score by six strokes, finishing the day with a 70 and 2-over-par, 146. Brandon McManus and John Morrow both shot 75 for the Vikes.

“The guys bounced backed nicely today with a team score of -7, 281,” said Vikes head coach Justin Clews after Round 2. ” The winds were down, so the course was gettable today for lower scores. Unfortunately, despite our improved play, we didn’t gain on the leaders, but we are right in the mix for the final rounds.”

The Western Mustangs still hold the leaderboard in the men’s division. The duo of Charles Fitzsimmons and Jackson Bowery finished in first and T3 individually, helping the Mustangs to an 11-under-par 565 for the tournament, seven shots ahead of the University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds in second place.

Fitzsimmons, who is from London, Ont., held a share of the lead heading into round two, and carded 4-under-par 68 to give himself the outright lead. Fitzsimmons is two shots ahead of Guelph’s Josiah Dixon, who moved into second place with a 5-under-par 67, the lowest individual men’s score in round two.

Three players trail Dixon by one shot for second rank; Bowery, Andrew Harrison (UBC) and Gordon Gibson (University of Toronto). All three sit at 4-under par for the tournament.

“As a result, we are on track to make final pairings in the last round with Western Men and UBC Men, and that’s exactly where we want to be. Great rounds today by Robin, Max, and Josh shooting 68, 68, 70, respectively. They all hit it well and played pretty steady all day long.”

The individual champions in the women’s and men’s competitions receive exemptions into their respective Canadian Amateur Championship.
