The GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon is introducing a Marathon Relay to its event. Registration will open on Friday, July 15, which is also the early bird registration deadline for the Marathon, Half Marathon, 8K Road Race and the Thrifty Foods Kids Run. The 37th Annual event will be held on Sunday, October 9.
The Relay will have 60 teams with a minimum of two runners and maximum of five. The relay legs range from 5.7 km to 10.5 km. Opening registration for the Marathon Relay is $300 per team, and $375 after August 15, if there are spots left. The Marathon Relay concept is growing in popularity among many races in North America.
“We are excited about adding the Marathon Relay to the list of options this year. With the various relay distances it will give the teams an opportunity to include participants from all ages,” says General Manager, Cathy Noel. “We encourage families and friends to form a team and take part in the 1st Annual GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon Relay Event. Individuals in the Marathon and Half Marathon will be caught up in the excitement and energy of the participating teams.”
All of the races are capped – the Marathon is capped at 1,350; Half Marathon at 3,300; 8K Road Race at 2,500, and the Thrifty Foods Kids Run at 1,300. “We have 500 spots left in the Marathon and the Half Marathon is 50% sold, so we urge everyone to register now,” adds Noel.
The early bird Marathon entry fee is $100. The deadline also applies to the Half Marathon and the 8K Road Race where the fees are $75 and $40. After July 15 regular registration fees will apply – $110 for the Marathon, $85 for the Half Marathon and $45 for the 8K Road Race. The entry fee for the Thrifty Foods Kids Run remains at $18 until October 5.
For the eighth year in a row the event will host the BC Marathon Championships. The total prize purse for the Dairyland High Performance Athlete Program in the Marathon and Half Marathon is $36,650, with $4,000 each going to the top male and female Marathoner, and a $5,000 bonus for a new men’s or women’s Marathon course record. The Men’s course record was set in 2013 by Lamech Mokono in 2:13:42 and the Women’s by Lucy Njeri in 2011 (2:37:56). Natasha Wodak-Fraser set a new women’s Half Marathon record in 2012 (1:14:06). The Men’s Half Marathon record is held by Jon Brown (2002 – 1:02:32). Gary Barber holds the men’s 8K Road Race course record (1989 – 23:23), and Ulla Marquette holds the women’s record (1991 – 26:24). Two World Records have also been set in Victoria – Gwen McFarlan in 2010 in the W75-79 (4:02:27); and Betty Jean McHugh in the W80-99 in 2008 (4:35:52).
