Like the Shamrocks across town, the Victoria HarbourCats are expected to field one of their best teams this year but are off to a slower-than-expected start.
No worries; it’s early. Both teams continue to add to their lineups.
The HarbourCats visited the 6-1 Yakima Valley Pippins on Wednesday and ended up losing 4-2 at Yakima Valley Stadium.
The HarbourCats’ started off on the wrong foot giving up three runs during the first inning. Big Texan Aaron Celestino, of Houston, was on the mound and gave up three runs barely before the echoes of the Star Spangled Banner faded into the semi-arid hillsides. After five innings, the Pippins smacked eight hits and earned four runs.
On the mound for the Pippins was Cal State’s Mark Woinarowcz, who earned the win, giving up just one hit during five innings of play.
The HarbourCats play once more in Yakima before heading to Kelowna for a three-game set against the stumbling-out-of-the-gate Falcons who are 1-5; it may be the tonic they need while in wine country.
The ‘Cats return to Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park on Monday when they host the Bend Elks (3-4) for a three-game set.
