Second-year outside hitter and Criminal Justice student Rayelle Zacharuk achieved a personal best of 25 kills in Camosun’s weekend series against the College of the Rockies Avalanche in Cranbrook, November 16 and 17. The Chargers defeated the hosting Avs in straight sets to sweep the weekend and advance to 7-3. Camosun is now tied for second in the PACWEST standings with a #13 CCAA National ranking.
“Rayelle actually had 25 kills for the second time this season, but this weekend she did it in six sets which is a significantly more notable accomplishment,” asserts Chargers Head Coach Brent Hall. “Despite being held back by an injury, she is emerging as a force in our league. In addition, Sydney Svicenec’s performance on Saturday was outstanding. She made 13 kills and 7 aces!”
“Katie Wayling, has been solid for us all season and is really starting to run our offense well,” added Coach Hall as he spoke about the veteran Camosun setter who earned last week’s PACWEST and CCAA Athlete of the Week awards. “Setters are often unsung heroes, so it has been nice to see Katie getting some attention for her level of play the last couple weeks.”
There is no doubt that players like Zacharuk and Svicenec are some of the conference’s up and coming players. Zacharuk is currently ranked fourth in PACWEST Kills (2.60/set), second in Aces (0.67/set) and fourth in Total Offensive Stats (3.37/set). Svicenec is ninth in Total Offensive Stats with a #12 ranking in Kills (2.00/S) and #6 in Aces (0.56/S).

This weekend, the Chargers close the first half of the season with an Island rivalry match up with the VIU Mariners.
“The Island rivalry matches always draw a crowd,” states Coach Hall. “It will be fun to compete in an energetic atmosphere. VIU has a good team this season, and I think we are one of the few teams in the division that has a legitimate shot at beating them. The games should be a good battle and a lot of fun to watch!”
The action starts in Victoria on Friday at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence, with the rematch scheduled for Saturday in Nanaimo.
