Australian rules football has arrived in Victoria. No, the professionals from down under are not touring British Columbia or Canada or North America at this time, the game has made a home here in Victoria, in a regional league called the British Columbia Australian Rules Football League. The game is also referred to as footy or Aussie Rules.
If you were not already aware, there are teams in Greater Vancouver, Victoria and Seattle, including the Burnaby Eagles, Delta Bayhawks, Vancouver Cougars White, Vancouver Cougars Red, Westcoast Saints, Seattle Grizzlies and Victoria Sharks.
There are currently two women’s teams, the Vancouver Vixens and Westcoast Wildcats while there is a junior men’s team too, the North Delta Junior Football Club.
The Victoria Sharks and Seattle Grizzlies were launched in 2016, to expand outside the lower mainland area.
According to the league, “Players from clubs in BC Footy have the opportunity to represent their province and Canada at various national and international tournaments including the International Cup that is run every three years in Melbourne, Australia.”
Amazingly, Canada is currently the World Women’s Champions while the men’s team is ranked fifth globally.
The BCARFL schedule runs from mid-April and into August.
