After years of training and qualifying competitions, over 80 athletes from Victoria are headed to the Special Olympics BC Summer Games taking place in Kamloops this week, from July 6th -8th.
The games bring together athletes with intellectual disabilities from all over BC and Yukon in a variety of summer sports. Victoria has athletes competing in 5 and 10-Pin Bowling, Swimming, Soccer, Softball, Bocce, Golf, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Track and Field, and Basketball.
Supporting Victoria-based athletes are 30 coaches and mission staff who volunteer their time each week to help their athletes reach their full potential.
Golf coach Martin Newham is one such volunteer. He says he feels lucky to have been selected to coach Victoria golfer Scott Jones because of the work he has put into his game.
“He is a good golfer and deserves the opportunity. I think if he plays to his strengths, which are driving and putting, and he can take a little advice for his short game he will do exceptionally well. He is very even-keeled and a bad shot here and there doesn’t upset him. That’s what makes him so good”
Certain events at the games will be live-streamed. The live-stream schedule can be viewed by clicking this link.
Athletes are selected for the games based on their performances at regional competitions across Vancouver Island. Victoria has one of the largest contingents at the BC Games with over 100 representatives. In total, there are over 1600 athletes and coaches taking part in the games this week.
