The University of Victoria Vikes women’s rugby team concluded their Canada West campaign on Oct. 21 with three players named Canada West All-Stars. Fifth-year centre Maddy Aberg and fourth-year Vikes Gurp Dhaliwal and Paige Farries were named to the 15-member list. Following Sunday’s Canada West final loss to the Calgary Dinos, the Vikes will finish as the Canada West silver medalists heading into the National Championships.

Calgary’s Kasselle Menin was named the the Canada West Most Valuable Player, while Dinos’ Simon Chi was named Coach of the Year. UBC’s Rori Wood was named the Canada West Rookie of the Year and Thunderbird Tess Woldring was named the Student-Athlete/Community service Award winner.

Aberg was fourth in Canada West points earned finishing with 27 points coming from eight converts, two penalty goals and one try. Vikes back row member Dhaliwal had one try in the season and contributed immensely to the Vikes offence and defence thanks to her strength and size, while leadership on and off the field was a bit part of the team peaking at the Canada West playoffs.

Farries, despite missing early games due to injury, showed her international experience when it mattered most. With two tries in the Canada West semifinal in the 25-0 win over UBC, Farries helped the Vikes secure their fourth-ever qualification for a U SPORTS National Championship following the Vikes hosting in 2005 and 2016, while the team also qualified in 2015 as Canada West champions.

The Vikes will now prepare for the U SPORTS National Championship hosted in Nova Scotia, Nov. 1-4. This will be the team’s third appearance in four seasons after Calgary knocked the Vikes out in the Canada West final in 2017.
