Wilson adds three local, one international to men’s soccer lineup

Vikes Communications

Local talent dominates a group of incoming recruits for the 2017-18 University of Victoria Vikes men’s soccer team’s line-up as head coach Bruce Wilson announces the addition of three Vancouver Island products and one international. Joining the Vikes next fall are Reynolds Secondary grads Will Adams and Josh Lamothe, Dover Bay’s Rhys Foster, as well as Mark Kaiser from Hong Kong.

“Mark will be a great addition to our incoming group of three island players,” described Vikes men’s soccer head coach Bruce Wilson of his lone international recruit. “He is left-footed, extremely quick and we look forward to him joining training camp in August.”

Kaiser, a defender from the Canadian International School (CDNIS) of Hong Kong has played competitively with the Hong Kong National Academy team, the Chelsea FC Soccer School of Hong Kong and the CDNIS varsity team. The five-foot-nine central defender intends to major in Engineering at UVic and has already spent time training with the Vikes varsity team. Kaiser is a four-time All-Tournament team member in the Southeast Asia Student Activities Conference, a conference comprised of 12 international schools around Southeast Asia, while the 18-year-old helped his team to the 2017 championship title in both the Hong Kong National High school and Hong Kong International schools league.

“I’ve played in international tournaments in Asia but coming to Canada and competing at university is a goal that I’ve had for a long time, and UVic is the ideal place for me to do so,” said Kaiser, who also led his team to the league title in the Under 18 age bracket in 2015 and 2016. “UVic has a fantastic reputation as one of the leading university soccer programmes in Canada and I’m excited to be a part of the success in the years to come.”

Also joining the Vikes in the fall are Victoria natives Adams and Lamothe, both who helped Reynolds capture the AAA provincial and island titles in 2016-17. Five-foot-eight striker Adams intends to major in Business and brings an impressive resume with him as the 17-year-old was named Rookie of the Year for Division 1 in the Vancouver Island Soccer League and he was named to the a Commissioners 11 Award for the BC AAA championship this year. Reynolds teammate Lamothe was named the MVP of the 2016-17 BC AAA Championship in the fall and is a three-time provincial team member. Lamothe, who intends to major in elementary education, was also a prospect for the U15 Canadian men’s national team in 2014.

“I am very excited to be so close to starting my time at Uvic, and especially playing on the soccer team,” stated an eager Lamothe. “I am hoping that I can challenge for a starting spot and make our team better. I am really looking forward to starting my studies in the Elementary Education program, as well. I think I will enjoy my time at Uvic, and I am anxious to get started.”

Nanaimo’s Foster rounds out the 2017-18 recruiting class. The six-foot-three central defender was named Dover Bay’s Athlete of the Year in 2016 and has spent the last five seasons with the Vancouver Island Wave program. Foster is entering sciences at UVic with an aim to pursue a degree in Biochemistry.

“All of our island recruits are excellent players,” said Wilson of Adams, Lamothe and Foster. “They have played locally and have participated in a variety of high school championships in the province. Josh and Will have had exceptional years with Reynolds and took their team to a league, island and provincial title at the AAA level. It is quite remarkable.”

“All three local players have played with the Island Wave senior men’s program and have really shown well throughout the season. We are very happy to have all three join the Vikes next year.”

The Vikes men’s soccer team begin their Canada West campaign on the road, Sept. 8, against Fraser Valley, while training camps start the first week of August.
