In this week’s big South Division matchup, the last-place Saanich Braves (17pts) visited the first place Westshore Wolves (21) at The Q Centre in Colwood.
The South division has a near four-way tie for second place with Saanich, Peninsula and Kerry Park having 17 points each and Victoria with 18. Going into Wednesday’s action, Westshore’s lead was marginal at best.
It was a close game, but in the end the Wolves prevailed by the score of 3-2.
Tomba Huddlestan, Brandon Tuttle and Cameron Coutre, all Victoria natives, each earned two points to pace the Wolves.
Huddlestan opened the scoring at 2:10 of the first period on the powerplay. Tuttle and Chase O’Keefe assisted.
Coutre scored the game winner at 19:30 of the second with Zach Guerra in the box for slashing.
The Braves’ Dale McCabe made it close with a goal at 13:22 of the third, the only goal of the period and his second of the game.
The Wolves outshot the Braves 31-20, while the Wolves powerplay went 2/5 and the Braves 1/7 on the night.
In other action: Thursday there are two games in the VIJHL with the Comox Valley Glacier Kings of the North Division paying a visit to the Victoria Cougars. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm. The Kerry Park Islanders visit the first-place Nanaimo Buccaneers, their game starts at 7:15 pm.
