A taste of home helped the University of Victoria’s women’s golf team turn in their strongest performance of the season at the Vikes Golf Shootout this week.

Two tough tournaments into the season, the Vikes had yet to find their identity. But a pair of consistent rounds on Monday and Tuesday, earned in the midst of two days of rain-soaked competition, seemed to indicate a changed squad.

The team that’s looking to book a trip to NAIA nationals after missing out last year finished second behind a strong UBC Thunderbirds team. The Vikes were led by Laura Ferreira, who shot a two-over-par 74 to finish in a tie for third with UBC’s Claire Emery.

“A much, much stronger performance than in Bellingham [at the Western Washington Classic],” said Vikes head coach Justin Clews. “Although they didn’t win, they put up two competitive scores and that’s the range of scores they need to shoot to get to nationals.”

UBC’s Kat Kennedy took the individual honours at the tournament, finishing with a seven-over-par 147 followed by teammates Barabara Neto-Bradley and Emery.

Quinn Fitzgerald and Nicole Gargarella beat out the rest of the UBC top-five, closing out in a tie for seventh with seven-over-par 161’s. Hannah Diamond and Melanie Murchison rounded out UVic’s five scorers in ties for 14th and 17th, respectively.

Rhiannon Jones, competing as an individual, ended in a tie for ninth with UBC’s Kate Johnson. With six players in the top-20, the Vikes were by far the most consistent team of the bunch. Only UBC came close with five players in the top-20.

Looking forward, the Vikes will have a chance to continue their momentum at the Cal State San Marco Fall Invitational next weekend. The trip to California will mark the last event for UVic in the calendar year before they return to action in 2017.
