The University of Victoria Vikes women’s golf team wrapped two rounds of golf over two days, Oct. 9-10, at the St. Martin’s Invitational, hosted at the Olympia Country & Golf Club in Olympia, Wash. The Vikes finished sixth overall with Cadence Hellmann finishing as the top Vike with a score of 167 (85-82).
The Vikes shot 334 on Day 1 and followed that up with a 346 on their second day finishing with a team score of 680, five strokes behind fifth-placed Hawaii – Hilo. Hosts, St. Martin’s University, took top spot with a team score of 631 (309-322) and their top scorer was Chloe Read who finished tied for fourth.
Simon Fraser University’s Emily Leung was the top individual scorer after shooting a 149 (73-76), while Concordia Lynsie Furuya took second with a 151 (75-76). Simon Fraser’s Belinda Lin took third with a 155 (79-76), lifting the Clan to second place in the team standings. Concordia took fourth place with a team score of 674.
Third year Hellmann finished 16th overall and was the top Vike after two rounds. Vikes rookie Quinn Fitzgerald was tied for 11th after the opening 18 holes, shooting an 81, while her round two score of 87 left her in 17th place overall with a two-round score of 168 (81-87). Fourth-year Vike Shannon Raina was the third-best Vike at the tournament, finishing tied for 19th after carding a 171 (82-89). Rookie Nicole Gargarella and third year Laura Ferreira finished tied for 23rd and 25th, respectively.
The Vikes have a quick turnaround as the team will be joined by assistant coach Alison Quinlan for the Western Washington University Invitational, hosted Oct. 12-13 in Bellingham, Wash. The team will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes son Tuesday.
