The opening round of the Canadian University/College Golf Championship is in the books and the University of Victoria Vikes women and men sit second and ninth, respectively, after a day of mixed results on the course.

The women stole the headlines for UVic on Tuesday, putting together a combined score of 20-over-par to stay near the front of the pack. They enter Day 2 on Wednesday two strokes behind the defending champions, Laval Rouge et Or, and one stroke ahead of third place UBC.

Quinn Fitzgerald led the way for the Vikes. The rookie from Calgary shot a four-over-par 58, carding two birdies on the front nine and another on the back. Teammates Laura Ferreira and Michaela Abey also logged birdies on the day, finishing a five-over-par 59 and 10-over-par 64, respectively. Cadence Hellmann rounded out the group with a 15-over-par 87.

The front nine gave the Vikes some trouble on Tuesday, as they combined for a 13-over-par 121 before cutting six shots off that total on the back nine.

The men had a tough go on Tuesday. Fresh off of a top-ten finish at the NAIA nationals in Illinois, they combined a 15-over-par 303, putting them 25 strokes behind the tournament leaders in UBC. The Thunderbirds continued their recent hot streak, combining for an impressive 10-under-par 278 to give them a 20-stroke lead on the next best team.

Lawren Rowe had the best score for UVic on Tuesday, putting together a solid two-under-par 34 on the front nine on his way to an overall one-under-par 71. Bruce Tomie and Jake Hamilton, competing as an individual, chimed in with four-over-par 76s, followed by Andrew Funk with a seven-over-par 79 andMike Griffin with an eight-over-par 80.

The Vikes combined to go six-over-par on the 14th hole—a par three—as all four counting players scored a bogie or worse. Both Rowe and Tomie registered double-bogies.

The teams will get back at it tomorrow. The first men's player is set to tee off at 12:30 p.m. PT while the women will get an early start with Fitzgerald leading the way at 8:10 a.m. PT.
