Sept. 29: Vikes men and women’s fifth-year forwards Cam Hundal and Emma Greig awarded.
A Cam Hundal hat trick in a 5-1 win over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack on Sept. 26 and a four-point weekend from Emma Greig in a two-game road series sweep helped earn the Vikes veteran fifth-year forwards Canada West First and Third Stars of the Week honours for the week of Sept. 25-27.
The University of Victoria Vikes men’s soccer team had a three-point weekend at home, Sept. 25-26, after a draw against a gritty UBC Okanagan team and a 5-1 win over Thompson Rivers. The CIS No. 9 ranked Vikes were a little flat in Friday’s draw, only fueling them to show their CIS top-10 ability the next night.
The Saturday clash was a fifth-year affair as co-captain and outside midfielder Cam Hundal put on a show offensively. The former 2011 CIS Championship MVP scored three goals, earned one assist and did the dirty work to force a WolfPack own goal for the Vikes’ fourth goal of the night. The Terrace, B.C. native scored the Vikes’ opening goal in the fourth minute and then notched again in the 54th and 90th to secure the hat-trick.
For the Vikes’ second goal, Hundal teamed up with fellow fifth-year midfielder Craig Gorman, weaving through a WolfPack defence for the game’s winning goal. Despite Friday night’s tie, Hundal proved how he can help make his team compete like a CIS Top-10 ranked team.
Meanwhile, it was an Emma Greig weekend as the fifth-year University of Victoria Vikes women’s soccer striker was a huge factor in a six-point weekend on the road for the Vikes, Sept. 26-27. The senior was pivotal as the Vikes dropped Thompson Rivers 3-0 and UBC Okanagan 5-1 to improve to a 4-2-1 record — tied for third in the West Division of the Canada West.
On Saturday, Greig assisted the opening two goals for the Vikes in the 25th and 45th minute. In addition, Greig led the Vikes in shots, with six, while starting her seventh-straight game.
A day following it was no different story as Greig opened the scoring with her third goal this season in the fourth minute of play. Greig went on to set up midfielder Sarah Douglas in the 41st minute, while also logging two shots in the game.
The Vikes women will gear up for two home games this weekend, Oct. 2-3, hosting Saskatchewan and Regina at Centennial Stadium while the Vikes men have a bye weekend before travelling to the mainland to face rivals the UBC Thunderbirds for a single-header on Oct. 9 at Thunderbird Stadium.
