The UVic Vikes track team compiled and outstanding seven personal and 15 season-best times as they competed in a pair of meets south of the border in Seattle, WA on Feb. 10-11.

First up for the team was the Husky Classic on Saturday and with top athletes participating from across western North America, the meet was stacked with highly competitive races.

“It was a great first day with three personal bests and a good performance by everyone on the team,” said Vikes head coach Brent Fougner.

Tyler Smith was the top Vikes finisher at the Husky Classic, finishing sixth-overall in the 800-metre race with a time of 1:50.73.

“I thought, because the guys in my race had gone quite fast last week, that we were going fast but in reality it was quite slow for the first lap,” said Smith. “I felt great the last 100-metres.”

Alyssa Mousseau picked up a personal best time of 2:08.91 in the 800-metre race to win her heat and finish in 11th-place overall.

Thomas OxlandBrendan HoffTimothy Longley and Isaac Penner all competed in the Mile race with Oxland, currently ranked No. 1 at 1000-metres in U SPORTS, pacing the Vikes contingent with a time of 4:05.61. Oxland was trailing for most of the race but turned things on with 300-metres left to go to win his heat and finish in 30th-place overall.

Chet Goerzen was the top Vikes male in the 3000-metres, finishing in a time of 8:22.54. Not far behind Goerzen were both Derrick Evans and Ben Weir. Evans picked up a personal best time of 8:25.48 and Weir was pleased with his time of 8:27.44.

“I was 30 seconds faster than my last race, so this is not a personal best but I’m happy that things are moving forward,” said Weir.

Chloe Hewitt ran to a personal best time of 4:58.37 in the mile to finish second in her section of competition.

“I made an effort to run on the inside of the track this time and was gaining confidence as the race progressed,” said Hewitt.

A number of Vikes found themselves on the podium at the UW Open on Sunday, with Smith again leading the way. The fifth-year athlete won the 1000-metre race in a time of 2:25.14 and finished second in the 600-metre.

Vanessa Sjoberg was the top finisher on the women’s side after she ran her way to a third-place finish in the 600-metre.

Hewitt, Mousseau and Caroline Harrell finished fourth, fifth and ninth respectively in the 1000-metre.

Alison Hooper was the final Vike to finish in the top-three, placing third in the 3000-metre with a time of 9:43.11.

The Vikes now enter the most important part of their season. Next up on the schedule are the Canada West Championships, held in Winnipeg, MB from Feb. 23-24, before they end their 2018 season with the U SPORTS National Championships in Windsor, ON.
