The University of Victoria Vikes men’s basketball program and head coach Craig Beaucamp are pleased to announce the commitment of guard-forward Jake Newman for the 2016-17 season.
The six-foot-six native of White Rock, B.C., is the third member of his family to join the Vikes. His father, Jamie, won multiple national championships with the school in the 1980’s and his sister, Jordyn, played with the women’s basketball team through the 2012-13 season.
“I’ve lived and played basketball in various places around the world, and the only place I can truly think to be home is the west coast of B.C.,” said Newman. “Ever since I started the recruiting process in high school, the only place I’d ever given true thought into going to on the west coast was UVic.
“My father played here and won national championships, my sister played here and just graduated. It was time for me to come home.”
A B.C. Provincial team member for multiple years and a First Team All-Star in the Provincial AAA Championship, Newman helped lead his high school, White Rock Christian Academy, to second and third place finishes at provincials. During his time at Lafayette College of the NCAA’s Division I, the team won the Patriot League championship and played in the NCAA Tournament.
Newman spent the last year redshirting at Carleton but jumped at the opportunity to return out west and continue his family’s tradition with the Vikes.
“We are excited to have Jake onboard,” said Beaucamp. “Jake brings us a player with a diverse skill set and the ability to play multiple positions. He has gained valuable knowledge and experience since his high school days back in White Rock.
“I believe that he knows what he wants and is eager to contribute. We look forward to Jake moving to Victoria and having a great summer of training and preparation leading up to next season.”
Newman will suit up with the Vikes men’s basketball team in the fall of 2016.
