The University of Victoria Vikes men’s golf team finished sixth overall in their opening tournament hosted by Northwest Christian. The Sept. 10-11 tournament was held at Emerald Valley Golf Club and the teams played three rounds.
Third-year Vike Josh Miller had a standout tournament to kick off his season, finishing second in the individual standings. Miller was consistent through out all three rounds posting a final score of 218, just four shots back of the leader.
As a team the Vikes finished with a score of 924. The tournament winners, UBC, finished with a score of 899.
“The wind picked up in the afternoon and made it a bit more difficult for us,” said head coach Justin Clews. “The course was very challenging and weather conditions made it tough for the team to sustain any kind of momentum. Josh really led the way on Monday morning shooting a team best 74.”
Miller and fouth-year Vike Jake Hamilton had solid rounds in the afternoon, both shooting a score of 74 (+2). In the third and final round, Miller finished with his best round of the tournament recording a 70 (-2).
The Vikes men’s golf team will now have a quick turnaround as they prepare for the Western Washington Invitational, hosted at Bellingham Golf and Country Club, on Sept. 24-25.
A complete team effort gave the Vikes women’s golf team a third-place finish at their first tournament of the season hosted by Northwest Christian at Emerald Valley Golf Club. The tournament was held in Eugene, Ore. on Sept 10-11.
The Vikes were consistent throughout the tournament posting Day 1 and 2 rounds of 318 and 327, finishing third behind UBC and Oregon Tech, who tied for first overall.
First-year Vike Sukriti Harjai led the way for the Vikes, starting off her post-secondary career shooting a 77 (+5) and, ultimately finishing with a two-round score of 160 (+16). Harjai finished eighth overall in the individual standings alongside Melanie Murchison who was also in the Top 10 with a 162.
Rounding out the scores were Quinn Fitzgerald (163), Nicole Gargarella (167) and Rhinannon Jones (172), who all finished in the Top 20.
The Vikes women’s golf team will travel to Washington on Oct. 8-9 for the Western Washington Invitational held at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.
