The University of Victoria Vikes women’s golf team ended the second and final day of the California State San Marcos Cougar Invitational on Mar. 1 in fourth place overall on Mar. 1 in San Marcos, Cali. The Cougar Invitational was a two-day, two-round competition that took place at St. Mark Golf Course from Feb. 29-Mar. 1.
First-year Vike Quinn Fitzgerald followed up her +3 score on the first day with a +5 on day two, ending the weekend as the top Vike in the field overall at +8 (75, 77). After sitting in the top-five at the end of day one, third year Laura Ferriera lost ground with a second-round 85 to finish tied for 21st at +17 (76, 85).
First year Nicole Gargarella matched her first day total to finish tied for 17th at +16 (80, 80). Third year Cadence Hellmann and fourth year Shannon Raina both rallied from less than favourable first round scores to post identical rounds of 78. Hellmann jumped the most spots in the standings than any other Vike, rising from 38th at the end of the first to finish tied for 29th at +20 (86, 78). Raina rounds out the Vikes’ five at +29 (95, 78) tied for 43rd.
Overall, the Vikes finished seven shots off third-place Claremont, whom the Vikes were tied with in third following the end of the first day of competition. A more distributed second round allowed the Vikes to stay comfortably ahead of Oklahoma Baptist University, who finished in fifth at +64 (324, 316).
Nevada will be the next destination for the Vikes women as they set their sights on the Primm Battle from Mar. 21-22 in Primm, Nev.
