Holders of 11 U SPORTS National Championship titles, the University of Victoria Vikes women’s field hockey team now know the path they must go through to claim their 12th, after the Canada West schedule was announced on June 6.
For the second year in a row, only one team from the conference will advance to the playoffs in a best-of-three series against the winner of the Ontario University Athletics conference. The two conference winners will battle for the right to be crowned U SPORTS Champion on Nov. 1-4 in Toronto.
The season will begin on Saturday, Sept. 15 when the Vikes travel to Vancouver for a pair of games against the always dangerous UBC Thunderbirds. UBC has won the past three Canada West and eight U SPORTS titles.
After staying on the road the following weekend for a pair of games against the Calgary Dinos, the Vikes will have the comfort of playing out the final four games of their schedule at home.
They will host UBC on Oct. 6-7 before finishing off the season by hosting the Dinos on Oct. 13-14.
Victoria is hoping to return to the top of Canada West for the first time since 2015, while also searching for their first national title since 2008. Last season the Vikes finished Canada West play in second-place with a record of 4-3-1.
