The UVic Vikes men’s rugby team scored 26 points in the second half but it wasn’t enough to overcome a large deficit, as they lost to the Castaway Wanderers 43-34 on October 22.

“We played okay at the end but we gave up way too many points early in the game. We played a good team today and we just made too many unforced errors,” said Vikes head coach Doug Tate.

Spencer Cooper, Kaprieli VataikiConnor KeysJonathan Lorimer and Fergus Hall each scored one try for the Vikes. Hall also added two converts and a successful penalty.

The Wanderers took the game to the Vikes early, building a 29-8 lead by the halftime break.

The Vikes came out in the second half and did their best to cut into the Castaway lead but despite some sustained pressure couldn’t even up the score line.

“It (the comeback) was good but we also left a lot of unfinished points on the board in the second half that could have made it even closer,” said Tate.

“We had our opportunities to catch them but then we let them score against the run of play. They were well-deserved winners.”

The Vikes now have a record of 1-3 and Tate knows that there are things his team must improve as the season goes on.

“Defensively we have to be better and we really have to be better in the first 30 minutes of the game. We just didn’t compete in the first 30 minutes and the game was decided by then,” said Tate.

The Vikes will look to get back to their winning ways next week when they take on the Westshore Valhallians.
