Vikes and Wesmen play to a draw in Winnipeg
"This game was always going to be tough. Winnipeg does a good job of getting bodies behind the ball and the pitch isn't that wide so that forces you to have to play direct," said Vikes head coach Tracy David
Winnipeg with the tie improves their record to 3-6-4, 13 points - currently tied with Mount Royal for 5th place in the Prairie Division. The Wesmen are one point up on Manitoba and two points ahead of Lethbridge. Victoria, already with a playoff spot secured in the Pacific Division improves their record to 5-4-4.
The Vikes had 15 total shots in the contest, compared to three for the Wesmen. Winnipeg goalkeeper Taylor Thorkelsson made 10 saves while Vikes goalkeeper Puck Louwes was called upon to make one save.
The opening 10 minutes of the match saw neither team being able to sustain any offensive pressure. Victoria had the best chance to score in the 14th minute as third year midfielder Caitlin Millham let go a shot from outside the goal area but Thorkelsson made a great save to keep the match scoreless.
The rest of the half was a battle of field position until late in the half when the Vikes kept the play in the Wesmen end of the pitch but were unable to find the net.
In the second half, the Vikes kept the pressure on the Wesmen but Thorkelsson made all six saves that came her way to preserve the tie.
"Their goalkeeper was pretty good, lots of our crosses were too close to her and she won the ball well, she thwarted lots of our chances," said David.
The Vikes best chance to win the game came in the very last minute of play. The Vikes ninth corner kick of the game eluded Thorkelsson and first-year defender Kennedy Martin volleyed the ball on net but a Wesmen defender was able to knock the ball away from danger.
"We did generate chances. We just need to find the net, we never seem to get the bounces when it comes to scoring," said David
The Vikes finish their regular season schedule on the road with a game against the Manitoba Bison tomorrow, October 23. While Victoria has sewn up a playoff spot they will have to wait until the final games of the season are over to see who they will play.
"Today we were a bit disappointed, we feel like we maybe didn't generate enough around the goal so we have to do some things better," said David.
