The top eight teams in the league are seeded according to their final total points in the league standings (not divisional). The first-place team earns the Andy Hebenton Award, they face the eighth-place team in the first round of the VIJHL playoff quarterfinals.

Previous years the eighth and ninth place teams faced each other in a single game knockout (Wildcard) game to determine which team would be seeded fourth in the North and gain entry into the playoffs. Each division then proceeded to a 1 v 4, 2 v 3, playoff format with the eventual divisional champions meeting in the VIJHL championship series.

All play-offs series in the VIJHL are best-of-seven series. The first VIJHL team to get 12 post-season wins will take home the Brent Patterson Memorial trophy and stamp their ticket to the Cyclone Taylor Cup in Richmond.
