Victoria’s best roller derby players will go head-to-head Saturday night (September 16th) as the Margarita Villains take on The Belles of the Brawl for the league championship. The Margarita Villains are the defending champions, claiming the decisive victory last year at the “Rumble at the Ridge” in Langford.

Villains Co-captain Bettina Slay says The Belles of the Brawl can expect the unexpected at this year’s bout:

“We are planning to pull out some surprises in this finale they’ve never seen from us before. I really look forward to catching them off guard and hope it gives us the advantage we need.”

The Belles of the Brawl meanwhile, will bring something extra to the table this game: their two newest draft picks Ruby Roughouser and Dark Knight — both transfer skaters, from Okanagan Roller Derby and Montreal Roller Derby respectively. As The Belles of the Brawl Co-captain Toombstone says, new talent aside, her team has come a long way since the start of the season:

“We’re hard-working, we’ve got tenacity, and good endurance. The Villains are fierce, but we are not to be underestimated!”

Prior to the battle for the Calamity Cup, the Eves’ junior team The Rotten Apples will take on their up-island rivals, The Candy Crushers.

The Apples will have some extra power added to their team after picking up Lawless and Emotional Clustertruck from the Saltspring Island Tempest. This will also mark the debut of two new Apples players, Kamakaze K and Low Expectations.

If you can’t make it out to the season finale this year, you will be able to catch it broadcast afterwards on Shaw TV. The Eves have picked up out of town celebrity announcers for the occasion, with Vancouver’s Mack the Mouth joining Victoria’s Thrill-via Rivera on the television broadcast, and Calgary’s Stay Pufft with local announcer Mr. Frenzie on the in-arena mics.

Tickets for the season finale are available online and at Ticket Rocket HQ (804 Broughton), Hive Hair, and Logan’s Pub.

The event is family friendly (kids under 10 are free!), and includes a beer garden, half-time event, 50-50 draw and a vendor village.

The Eves of Destruction Roller Derby League was formed in 2006, has over 70 players, refs, and officials, and features five teams. Adult members play for The A-Team, The Belles of the Brawl, The Margarita Villains and The Hard Cores. The league also has a gender-inclusive junior team, The Rotten Apples, made up of players aged 10-18.
