The Victoria Royals will begin their 2017-18 WHL Regular Season this Friday night with a home contest against BC Division rivals, the Vancouver Giants with puck drop set for 7:05 p.m.
BACK FROM CAMP: Royals’ forward Matthew Phillips and defenceman Scott Walford have been returned to the club from their respective NHL teams in time for Friday’s Home Opener. Phillips has returned to Victoria after he played for the Calgary Flames in contests at the Young Stars Classic against the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, and Winnipeg Jets. Phillips was selected by his hometown Flames at the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Walford meanwhile, was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in this past June’s NHL Draft, and took part in the club’s Rookie Camp. The blueliner competed in a rookie tournament as Montreal faced the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators.
FRESH FACES: The Royals will open the 2017-18 WHL Regular season with eight new players on their roster. Four of those players bring WHL experience as Yan Khomenko, Anthony Bishop and Jared Freadrich were acquired via trades with the Moose Jaw Warriors, Seattle Thunderbirds, and Red Deer Rebels, respectively. Meanwhile, Jared Legien was signed by the Royals after he played for the Kootenay ICE. Rookies Hunter Aprs (1999), Igor Martynov (1999), Matthew Smith (2000) and Tarun Fizer (2001) are all starting their first season in the league.
