The Victoria Royals would like to congratulate forward Matthew Phillips who has agreed to a three-year entry-level contract with the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Calgary Flames.
The Flames, Phillips hometown team, selected the forward in the sixth round, 166th overall, in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
The Calgary, AB native is in the midst of his third WHL season where he has appeared in 39 regular season games and has recorded 59 points (28g-31a) to lead the club in scoring. Phillips also sits seventh in the WHL in both points (59) and goals (28), and is tied for first in shorthanded tallies (4). In November, he was a member of Team WHL at the CIBC Canada Russia Series, where he collected a goal in two games.
The 5-7, 155 lb forward registered a career year last season where he recorded 90 points (50g-40a) through 70 games and became the first Royals’ player in team history to score 50 goals. Phillips was also named to the Western Conference First All-Star Team at the end of the 2016-17 season. Philips concluded the 2016-17 season with the Stockton Heat of the American Hockey League and tallied one assist in one regular season contest, and took part in two playoff games.
During the 2015-16 campaign, Phillips was awarded the Jim Piggott Trophy as the league’s Rookie of the Year, and finished the season with the most points (76) and goals (37) to lead all WHL rookies. Phillips also finished tied for first in the league in game-winning goals (10), and tied for second in powerplay markers (16).
The 1998-born forward has spent his entire WHL career with the Royals where he has played in 183 regular season games and scored 228 points (116g-112a). He has also registered six goals and five assists in 19 career playoff contests.
Phillips was selected by Victoria in the second round, 33rd overall, in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.
The Royals are in Kamloops tomorrow afternoon to battle the Blazers at the Sandman Centre with puck drop set for 2:00 p.m.
Victoria returns home for a contest with the Everett Silvertips on Friday, January 5th at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre for the team’s first home game of 2018.
