The Victoria Highlanders lost their second straight game to open their 2018 Premier Development League season 0-2, on the road in Calgary. They lost Friday, May 11 by the score of 2-0 to the Foothills FC in Okotoks, then again on Sunday by the score of 1-0.
The winning goal was scored at the 30th minute in the first half on Sunday by Moses Danto. He headed (shoulder) a corner kick that was taken by Kyle Jones.
All three goals in the two-game set were scored off stoppages in play. The Foothills benefited from two penalty kicks during game one.
With the two wins, Calgary, the team that is expected to win the Northwest Division, earned six points for their two wins so far this PDL season.
The Foothills boast a long-term professional in former Canadian national team member Nik Ledgerwood – a 33-year-old with international experience, who played pro in Germany for 15 years.
But they also have a very strong and hard-working backline. Victoria came close in what may be referred to as a heated match but was hamstrung while trying to penetrate the fullbacks.
The Foothills finished the 2017 season second in the division and won the division title in 2016. The Highlanders are expected to be more competitive this year with their completely revamped line-up and front office staff shuffle.
The Highlanders next play at home at the University of Victoria’s Centennial Stadium on Sunday, May 20th at 2:00 pm. They will be hosting the Portland Timbers U23 team, who will be playing Wednesday and Friday, leading up to the match and may be a tired team, however, they did go 4-0 in the pre-season.
