The Victoria Highlanders started off their 2018 Premier Development League season the hard way, having to take on one of the teams expected to dominate the Northwest Division this season. They also happen to boast former Canadian national team member Nik Ledgerwood – a 33-year-old with international experience, who played pro in Germany for 15 years.

The completely revamped Victoria team did all they could to shut out the Foothills during the first half, which ended at 0-0, but penalty kicks would end the game in Calgary’s favour.

Two Foothills players would score during the second half on those penalty kicks. Two minutes in, Ali Musse put the home squad up 1-0, then one-minute into injury time (91), Nico Pasquotti would score to put the game out of reach.

The Foothills continue to field a competitive team. They finished 2017 second in the division and won the division title in 2016. The game versus Victoria was their home opener.

The teams will play again on Sunday in Calgary at 1:00 pm.
