The Victoria Grizzlies (23-14-3-2) hosted the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (11-23-3-4) Friday night at The Q! Centre in Colwood and shut them out, defeating them by the score of 3-0.

With the win, the Grizzlies add to their slim lead in the Island Division of the British Columbia Hockey League over the Nanaimo Clippers by two points. They have played the same number of games at 42. The Powell River Kings sit in third place with 48 points, but have two games in-hand; it’s tight at the top.

Saturday and Sunday, the Kings visit both Nanaimo and Victoria. There could be a shuffling of the order of the top-three positions, this weekend.

Friday, the Grizzlies scored one goal in each period. Ethan Nother, who hails from London, ON opened the scoring at 4:47 of the first, unassisted, it was his 17th of the season.

Grizzlies’ St. Louis native, Matthew Doran scored his seventh at 7:46 of the second on the powerplay. Carter Berger and Lucas Clark assisted on the play.

At 16:29 of the third, hometown forward, Cameron Thompson recorded his 11th of the season. T.J. Freidman and Jamie Rome earned assists on the powerplay marker.

The difference was the powerplay as Victoria had a whopping nine advantages and managed to capitalize on two of them, while the Bulldogs saw five powerplay opportunities.

Shots were 27-25 for Victoria. John Hawthorne manned the net for the Bulldogs, while Zachary Rose earned his second shutout of the season for the Grizzlies. The Paradise, NL native sports a .921 save percentage, 2.90 goals against average and a record of 13-10-1.

The Grizzlies take on what should be a tired Powell River Kings team Sunday in a matinee game with puck drop scheduled for 1:00 pm at The Q! Centre.
