The Victoria Grizzlies finished their three-games-in-three-nights road trip last weekend winning two of three by defeating the Coquitlam Express (6-3) and Vernon Vipers (6-5), but losing to the Penticton Vees (4-1). Friday, they took on the Alberni Valley Bulldogs in Port Alberni and walloped them 7-2.

The Grizzlies continue their strong season and boast a record of 18-8-0-1 and sit in first place in the Island Division of the British Columbia Hockey League. They are seven points up on the second place Powell River Kings 37-30.

With the score tied at 0-0, Mackenzie Wight scored his second of the season from Stephen Castagna and Ryan Moon in the dying seconds of the first period – at 19:19 for the Bulldogs.

With Marcus Walter serving two minutes for roughing, assessed at 20:00 of the first, Dawson Tritt scored a powerplay marker at 29 seconds of the second period, the Bulldogs appeared to wrest control of the game with the otherwise backbreaking shorthanded marker, but that was all she wrote for the Bulldogs as the Grizzlies mauled them with seven unanswered goals from there on.

Alex Newhook scored a hat trick with his 13, 14 and 15th goals of the season. Cameron Thompson scored a pair and singles came from the sticks of Ryan Nolan (10th), and Marty Westhaver (8th).

It was the first hat trick this season for Newhook, a sophomore from St. John’s, NL. He has scored two goals three other times this season.

Kyle Dumba stopped 34 of 36 shots to earn the win for the Grizzlies, while John Hawthorne stopped 25/32 in net for the Bulldogs.

The powerplays went 2/5 for the Grizzlies and 0/3 for the Bulldogs.

The Grizzlies play Saturday at The Q Centre against the Nanaimo Clippers. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
