Three third period goals are all that the Victoria Cougars of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League needed Friday night to dispatch the first-place Saanich Braves at Pearkes Arena.

They won by the score of 3-1 and leapfrog the Braves for first place overall, however, the Braves have two games in-hand.

The Braves, who had a 10-1-1 start, are now 0-2, losing 7-4 to the Westshore Wolves then to the Cougars on Friday.

There was no scoring during the first and almost all the second period before Evan Abgrall opened the scoring for Saanich at 18:56 of the second on the powerplay. He was set up by Gavin Grewal and Kyle Mace. Matthew Clark was off for a 10-minute misconduct as well as two-minutes for a check to the head.

Kevan McBean, Foster Martin and Booker Chacalias all scored during the third at 5:19, 7:37 and 11:39 respectively. Eight different Cougars factored in the three goals.

Owen Sikkas got the win in goal for Victoria stopping 41 of 42 shots, while Connor Cheyne took the loss stopping 27 of 30.

Victoria went 0/3 on the man advantage while Saanich scored on one of their four opportunities.

Elsewhere in the VIJHL, The Wolves came back down to reality, after becoming the first team to beat the Braves in regulation time this season. They lost to the Campbell River Storm 4-1 in Rod Brind’Amour Arena. The Peninsula Panthers eked out a 3-2 win over the Comox Valley Glacier Kings in Courtenay. Meanwhile, the Oceanside Generals lost to the visiting Kerry Park Islanders 4-2, despite firing 42 shots at goaltender Charles-Oliver LePage – nearly double the Islanders’ shot total of 24.

This weekend, the Storm visit the Glacier Kings and the Braves visit the Islanders on Saturday, while the Panthers visit the Cougars on Sunday. The Saturday games start at 7:30 pm, while the Sunday game has a 3:30 pm scheduled puck drop.
