Matteo Ventura was named the Varsity Council Male Athlete of the Month for September after the rookie scored seven goals in his first 10 games in a Vikes uniform. After the first month of competition, Ventura leads the Vikes in scoring and sits in a tie for second in Canada West. The Prince George native scored twice against the UBC Okanagan Heat in the annual Thunderfest game on Sept. 7 and was named the Canada West Men’s star of the week for the week of Sept. 3-9.

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Rachel Baird, Soccer

After scoring three goals in the Vikes opening nine games including the game-winning goal against Lethbridge on Sept. 15, Rachel Baird has been named the Varsity Council Female Athlete of the Month. The fourth-year midfielder from Nanaimo, B.C. is tied for second amongst her team in goals and third in shots on goal. Baird’s game-winning goal against Lethbridge has proved to be crucial as the Vikes battle to remain in a playoff position in the Canada West Pacific division. Baird’s offensive talents and leadership will continue to be relied upon for the remainder of the season.

TEAM OF THE MONTH
Women’s Field Hockey

The University of Victoria women’s field hockey team put together an undefeated record of 2-0-2 in the month of September. Strong defensive play and a late game comeback got the Vikes two consecutive draws against the UBC Thunderbirds on Sept. 15-16. The following weekend on Sept. 22-23 the Vikes traveled to Calgary where they swept the weekend series against the Dinos, out scoring their opponent 7-1 in the two games. The Vikes undefeated record puts them on top of the Canada West standings with 4 games remaining in the regular season.
