The Vancouver Island High School Cross Country Championships will be taking place Wednesday the 28th of October at Beaver Lake Park in Saanich. The meet should prove to be a very exciting competition and a foreshadowing of the provincial high school championships, which will take place on November 7th at Jericho Beach in Vancouver.
Vancouver Island has a long and storied history of producing some of Canada’s best distance runners. The 2015 high school competition will be a classic. This year, Reynolds Secondary and Oak Bay High School will compete for team wins; however, they are up against the perennially strong Dover Bay senior boy’s team of Nanaimo who won the BC Championships in 2014 while Claremont Secondary finished second.
This year, three very strong athletes in Brendan Hoff and Taylor Lyman who both attend Reynolds Secondary and Jack Stanley representing Oak Bay High School will contest the senior boys race while Nanaimo’s Alyssa Mousseau of Wellington High School, Madison Heisterman with Queen Margaret’s School, Desirae Ridenour of Cowichan Secondary in Duncan and Hannah Henry of Mount Douglas Secondary will be among the favourites in the senior girls race.
Almost all of the athletes competed in the BC Athletics provincial cross country championships, a meet where many of the best athletes compete, while typically representing the running club they belong to outside of school. The event took place on Saturday in Nanaimo’s Beban Park. Mousseau finished fourth among 17-year-olds, while Stanley was seventh in the boy’s 17-age–category. Heisterman finished third among 15-year-olds.
On the senior girl’s side, the island placed three teams – Nanaimo District Secondary, Oak Bay Secondary, and Mount Douglas Secondary – in the top ten at the BC HIgh School Championships last year and each of these teams should be counted among the favourites again in the senior girl’s race.
In the junior events, Kalum Delaney who attends Reynolds, Michael Barber of Oak Bay and Finn Battersby with Stelly’s will be among the top finishers in the boys’ race. Other athletes to watch for are Justine Stecko of Oak Bay, Ashley Cathro of Claremont, and Cara Butler representing Oak Bay, they will be among the leaders in the junior girl’s race.
Delaney and Barber had an excellent race Saturday at the provincial club championships in Nanaimo by finishing second and third among 15-year-old boys. Delaney virtually tied Jordan Schmidt of the Langley Mustangs. They were both credited with the time of 8:55, with the win going to Schmidt. Barber was close behind in 9:04.
Wednesday’s Championships take place at Beaver Lake Park (near the entrance to the park off of Elk Lake Dr.)

1:00pm – Jr. Girls Race;
1:30pm – Jr. Boys Race
2:00pm – Sr. Girls Race
