A trio of Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League games Friday night did little more than add to the apparent parity in the South Division with the last place Peninsula Panthers defeating the fourth-place Westshore Wolves by the score of 4-3. The Saanich Braves tied the Campbell River Storm 2-2 and the Oceanside Generals laid a beating on the Comox Valley Glacier Kings 8-2.

The Storm threw 38 shots at Braves’ netminder Riley Mathieson, 14 during the first period alone. The teams exchanged goals with the Storm opening the scoring at 3:07 of the first with a shorthanded marker. Jake McKenzie scored from Ryan Butler.

At 12:57 of the second the Braves tied it up with a Ryan Strange goal. The only assist went to Zach Guerra.

Brett Kindley scored at 4:02 of the third to put the Storm up 2-1; however, Dayton Clarke tied it up at 12:19 from Gavin Grewal.

Even though the Storm hammered another 10 shots at Matheison in overtime, the extra frame decided nothing.  Liam Murphy stopped 31 of 33 shots. The powerplays went 0/4 and 0/3 for Saanich and Campbell River respectively.

With the tie, Saanich continues to sit in second place in the South Division to the Victoria Cougars. Both teams have 42 points; however, Victoria has one game in-hand and one more win.

One point separates the Wolves, Kerry Park Islanders and the Panthers, who have 34, 34 and 33 points respectively.

In the Panthers – Wolves game, the Panthers went up 2-1 during the first period with goals by Riley Braun and Tanner Wort at 1:56 and 19:48. Braun’s goal came 37 seconds after Wolves’ Cameron Coutre’s game-opening goal that came at 1:19.

Early in the second period, the Wolves would tie the game up with a powerplay marker at 3:26 by Coutre followed by a short-handed goal at 6:26 Nicholas Polomark, unassisted.

Braun would score his second to tie the game up at 3-3 at 13:35 of the second. Shota Yamamoto would score the winner on the powerplay at 16:36 of the third.

Josh Lingard with three assists would lead the way for the Panthers along with Wort with his goal and two assists.

Coutre and Brandon Tutte earned two goals and two assists respectively for the Wolves.

Chris Akerman would get the win in net for the Panthers stopping 30 of 33 shots that were fired his way, while Luke Sheldrake would take the loss stopping 26 of 30.

The VSN Game of the Week will take place Sunday at the Archie Browning Arena, where the first-place Nanaimo Buccaneers of the North Division sail (not literally) into Victoria to try to scratch out a victory over the South Division-leading Victoria Cougars. Puck Drop is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
