Third-year Vike Danielle Hanus was the top swimmer for Victoria over the two-day competition. Hanus finished in first place in the 50-metre backstroke and the 200-metre butterfly, second place in the 100-metre butterfly and third place in the 50-metre butterfly. The Ontario native also helped the Vikes to third place finishes in both the 200-metre and 400-metre team relays.

The Vikes women finished in fourth place in the team standings with 599 points with the UBC Thunderbirds finishing on top with 1069 points. The Vikes men finished with 509 points putting them in fifth place.

“We started the weekend off strong with some impressive results in the preliminary races on Saturday,” said Vikes assistant coach Ryan Clouston. “There were a number of personal bests amongst our team and many of them carried that success into the second day of competition on Sunday.”

Allison Ballantyne and rookie Lauren Taylor both had excellent weekends,” said Clouston. “Allison swam great all weekend in some tough events while under some difficult circumstances and Lauren was our best swimmer on Sunday having only trained for two days before the meet due to an injury.”

Ethan Phillips posted the top result for the Vikes’ men, finishing in fourth place in the 400-metre individual medly. Daniel Greer had two fifth place finishes, one in the 100-metre breaststroke and another in the 100-metre butterfly. Padric Mckervill, Bailey EspersenBuzz MallenderEthan Jensenand Zachary Dumas all enjoyed top 10 finishes as well.

“Overall, we are happy with our teams performance this weekend. We had some notable athletes missing from our men’s team but looking forward to more success in the coming weeks,” commented Clouston.

“These meets are a great way for our athletes to learn what they need to fine-tune in their race craft heading over the next couple weeks before heading to our first big competition of the year at the Canada West Championships in Calgary,” added Clouston.

The Vikes will now turn their focus to the Island Cup Invitational being held at the Commonwealth Pool in Victoria from Nov. 9-11. This will be the final tune up for Victoria before the Canada West Championships in Calgary on Nov. 23-25.
