Surf Canada is proud to announce the 2018 Surf Canada Nationals, set to take place at Wickaninnish Beach, BC from May 4-7, 2018. This Canadian-only event will determine National Champions in 10 divisions and serve as a direct pathway for selections to the Canadian Team competing at international competitions.
”I think it’s amazing to have an all-Canadian event to decide our national champions,” stated reigning national champion Pete Devries. “It gives everyone a great indication of where Canadian surfing is right now and gives all the competitors some much needed competitive experience.”
The event will feature female and male surfers in each of following divisions; Open Shortboard, Junior U-18, Junior U-16, Longboard, and SUP Surf.
“In the past our Canadian Champions have had to battle through rounds at an international event which can skew the results for some competitors,” added Devries. “This event is much more fair to decide a national champion. Having it at Wickaninnish Beach will really level the playing field and add a new twist to the works.”
Current women’s champion Sanoa Olin, along with sister Mathea, Hanna Scott and Leah Oke, as well as Devries, Noah Cohen, and Michael Darling are just a few of the familiar names who will be hitting the water in search of the 2018 National Champion title.
“This event will lead into the Rip Curl Pro the following weekend, allowing competitors to gain some experience and get ready for the following event,” concluded Devries. “It’s great to have these events back-to-back and will hopefully lead to great results in both for all the Canadian competitors.’’
The 2018 Surf Canada Nationals are proudly hosted by Parks Canada, and supported by Tourism Ucluelet, Tourism Tofino, Government of Canada, Red Bull, Ocean Rodeo, Reef, Nixon, Clif Bar, BN3TH, FCS, Gorilla, Headhunter, Corkcicle, XCEL Wetsuits, Pacific Coastal Airlines, Surfrider Foundation and SBC Surf.
“Everybody at Surf Canada has the same focused work ethic and unwavering determination that our athletes have to become their absolute best,” stated Dom Domic, Surf Canada President. “By focusing on achieving that level of excellence day in and day out, Nationals will be that showcase for not only the athletes but also the organization and our partners…Canadians qualifying for the PanAm and Olympic Games is within reach.”
