The starter’s pistol is now pointed skyward for the start of the seventh annual Christie-Phoenix Insurance Victoria Run Series. The first track meet, of the seven-event series begins Saturday, May 14th with the crack of the gun to sound at 6:30 PM at the University of Victoria for runners of all abilities.
There are three track meets, which also include UVic dates of Saturday, June 4th and Saturday, July 23rd as well as three other events taking place in September including a 10K race around Elk and Beaver Lakes, a cross-country race of six kilometres at Beaver Lake and a handicapped race to the top of Mt. Doug. Runners will race up the road.
The series is capped-off with the annual silent auction and awards party that takes place in the Sticky Wicket’s Maple Room in the Strathcona Hotel. Proceeds go to KidSport Greater Victoria. Book tickets early!
The first meet provides racing opportunities for kids, beginners of all ages, age-group competitors and elites, including the odd Olympian and many of the UVic Vikes, who are perennial conference champions. During the 2015 season, the Vikes’ men won the national cross-country championships.
Saturday, May 14th will include an 800-metre (two-lap), 3,000-metres and a 1500-metre race. All runners participate at their own levels. All races will be photo-timed; there are draw prizes and giveaways, medals to top three finishers of each race for men and women. The first-place men and women also receive a beautiful bouquet of flowers supplied by Petals Plus Florists.
Runners who take in a minimum of five races, with one being at least as long as 5K or 5,000-metres on the track can compete for series points in their own 10-year age-groups for the opportunity to draw for prizes such as shoes by Frontrunners Footwear and season passes for the following year.
There is also a relay race taking place during the June 4th meet where cross-fit and gym members will race 4 x 400m for a coveted trophy. Proceeds from the relay go to KidSport Greater Victoria.
