The Vancouver Island Premiere League (VIPL) Saanich Fusion-Prospect Lake U14 Boys team won the Provincial A Cup tournament at Surrey Newton Athletic Park that took place Thursday, July 6 to Sunday, July 9.
First, they had to win the Vancouver Island Boys VIPL Division for the 2016-2017 season.
The team was a combination of Saanich Fusion and PLSC players and represented Vancouver Island at the Surrey tournament; however, they have been a VIPL team for the entire year.
Four regions of the province were represented, in addition to Vancouver Island, there was Fraser Valley, Surrey-Guilford, and Okanagan.
The three other teams were select teams, meaning the best players from various teams within each region were named to the team, respectively.
Thursday, Saanich-PLSC narrowly defeated the Okanagan by the score of 1-0. Friday, they drew nil-nil against the Fraser Valley. Saturday, they again drew, this time 2-2 versus Surrey-Guilford.
During the gold medal game on Sunday, the island representatives defeated Fraser Valley 2-0 to earn the cup.
In addition to Saanich-PLSC winning gold, they were honoured with the Fair Play award for their division at provincials.
“The Provincial tournament was a great and exciting experience,” shared Centre-back Jamal Herron. “To win the Provincial A Cup as a club team, including the Team Fair Play award, made it an even more of a special experience!”
The tournament was the Provincial A Cup at Central City Breakers Football Club at Surrey Newton Athletic Park, which included teams in the U13 to U18 divisions.
