The Saanich Braves were on a roll going into Wednesday night’s game against the Peninsula Panthers at Pearkes Arena. They sported a 9-0-0-1 record to start the season. In an effort to keep the win streak and unbeaten streak alive, they blasted 46 shots – 25 during the third period – on goaltender Chris Akerman.

It worked. They won by the score of 4-1, but they got off to a slow start managing just five shots during the first period.

The Braves opened the scoring at 47 seconds of the second period as veteran Gavin Grewal scored from Dale McCabe and Evan Abgrall.

They scored three in a row during the third period, before giving up one by Garett Gilbertson at 15:05. Jackson Estey, Abgrall and James Vince scored at 1:37, 5:37 and 8:06 on the powerplay.

The Panthers went 1/3 on the man advantage, while the Braves scored at a rate of 40% on the man-advantage going 2/5.

Ackerman faced all 46 shots for the Panthers, while Chris Combiadakis earned the 29-save win for the Braves.

Elsewhere, the second-place Victoria Cougars kept pace with the Braves defeating the Westshore Wolves 2-1 at The Q Centre in Colwood.

The Cougars next face the Campbell River Storm in Campbell River on Friday. The Storm lead the North Division with an 8-3 record. Wolves and Panthers play in Sidney Friday. The Braves will host the Kerry Park Islanders. The lone Thursday game pits the Comox Valley Glacier Kings against the Nanaimo Buccaneers in Nanaimo. The Buccaneers sit in second place in the North Division, while the Glacier Kings are looking for their first win of the season 0-10.
