Two games in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League Friday night resulted in the Saanich Braves defeating the visiting Peninsula Panthers 5-1, while the Comox Valley Glacier Kings were shutout 5-0 by the Campbell River Storm.

The difference-maker in the Saanich and Peninsula game was Saanich goaltender Anderson Violette who stopped 41 of 42 shots including 16 during the third period. The Braves made the most of their opportunities scoring five times on 21 shots.

The Braves who re 3-3 in their last six, started the season 10-1-1-1 and went on a 3-8-1-2 stretch before pulling things together as of late.

Jackson Estey opened the scoring at 9:14 of the first period. Assisting on the goal was Jack Groves.

Jake Wilhelm scored what would prove to be the winner at 12:03 of the first from Violette.

The Braves got up 3-0 when Zach Guerra scored at 1:46 of the second period.

Gavin Grewal added two more including an unassisted marker at 5:47 of the third period.

Hayden Visscher scored the lone goal for Peninsula.

The powerplays went 0/5 for Peninsula and 0/4 for Saanich.

Saanich doesn’t play again until Wednesday, Jan. 2 when they visit the Westshore Wolves at The Q Centre. The Panthers are off until Friday, Jan. 4 when they host the Kerry Park Islanders.

Much like the weather as of late, the Storm blew away the Comox Valley Glacier Kings by the score of 5-0. The Storm held the Glacier Kings to just 15 shots and fired 34 of their own at goaltender Matthias Smith.

Jaden Little earned the easy shutout in goal for Campbell River.

Four different goal scorers tallied for Campbell River including Josh Pederson who bookended the game with a pair, including the game-winner at 13:18 of the first period.

Also scoring was Noah Fladagar, Owen Christensen and Damon Kramer.

The Storm are now off until Friday, Jan. 4 when they again play the Glacier Kings at Rod Brind’Amour Arena.
