The Victoria Royals rallied from a 4-1 deficit, but it wasn’t enough as they were defeated 5-4 by the Everett Silvertips in the teams’ first game of the Holiday Inn Pre-Season Classic at Xfinity Arena.
Both clubs took the opportunity to give their younger players some game time as they each dressed nine rookies.
The Royals trailed 4-1 early in the third period after four consecutive goals by the Silvertips. Victoria’s Keith Anderson and Chaz Reddekopp tallied to bring the visiting team within one, before Patrick Bajkov restored Everett’s two goal lead. Regan Nagy would score with the goalie pulled, but the Royals were unable to find the tying goal. Victoria’s first marker was notched by Matthew Phillips. Everett’s other goals were scored by Dawson Leedahl, Carson Stadnyk, Gunnar Wegleitner and Yan Khomenko.
Royals’ 20-year-old goaltender Coleman Vollrath got the nod in net and turned aside 24 of 29 shots. Silvertips’ 1995- born netminder Austin Lotz stopped 39 of the 43 shots he faced in the win.
Victoria went 0/6=0.0% on the powerplay, while the Silvertips were 1/5=20.0%.
Victoria scratched 20-year-old Alex Forsberg along with veterans Jared Dmytriw, Dante Hannoun, Tyler Soy and Marsel Ibragimov.
The Royals continue their pre-season schedule in Everett, WA, tomorrow with a contest vs. the Seattle Thunderbirds at 3:00 p.m. Victoria will play their last game of the tournament against the Tri-City Americans on Sunday with puck drop scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
Victoria’s lone home contest of the pre-season is set for Sunday, September 13th when they host the Vancouver Giants. Puck drop is set for 2:05 p.m. at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
