The Victoria Royals are proud to announce that Matthew Phillips has been invited to Hockey Canada’s National Junior Team Summer Development Camp for the 2018 World Junior Hockey Championships.

The development camp will see 42 players born in 1998 or later from across Canada compete for a spot on the World Junior team. The camp will take place in Plymouth, MI. The annual tournament will be held in Buffalo, NY from December 26, 2017 to January 5, 2018.

Phillips recently completed his second season in the Western Hockey League (WHL) where he recorded 90 points (50g-40a) in 70 games. The Calgary, AB native became the first player in Royals’ history to score 50 goals in a single season, and recorded the fourth most markers in the Canadian Hockey League.

The 5-6, 141 lb forward recorded one goal and two assists for three points in six post-season games this year. Phillips concluded his year with the Stockton Heat of the American Hockey League and tallied one assist in one regular season contest, and took part in two playoff games.

Phillips was selected by his hometown Calgary Flames in the sixth round, 166th overall, in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
