SALEM, Ore. – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s golf team stretched their championship total in 2016 to two with a first-place finish at the Corban Spring Invitational on Apr. 4-5 in Salem, Ore at the Creekside Golf Club.
The Vikes men took the lead and never looked back by leading the tournament at the conclusion of all three rounds.
It was all Vikes at the top of the standings on the men’s side with second year Lawren Rowe finishing first with a three-round score of +1 (71, 73, 70). Fellow second year Mike Griffin placed right behind Rowe in second at +4 (73, 70, 74), continuing a solid streak for the Social Sciences major after finishing first at last year’s event in Oregon.
Fourth year Alex Cartwright and second year Andrew Funk finished with top-ten finishes of +14 (74, 76, 77) and +15 (80, 73, 75), respectively. First year Jake Hamilton – the only Vike who hadn’t played at Creekside prior to this year’s tournament – had a strong showing by tying for 15th with a three-round score of +18 (76, 77, 78).
On the women’s side, the Vikes placed third behind hosts Corban University in second and winners the UBC Thunderbirds in first. All five of the Vikes women’s competing athletes finished in the top-20 of the invitational.
The tournament included first tee-offs for Quinn Fitzgerald, Laura Ferreira and Nicole Gargarella at Creekside with only Shannon Raina and Cadence Hellmann having ever played a full round at the course.
Hellmann was the top Vike with a two-round score of +16 (81, 79) while Raina and Ferreira finished side-by-side tied for 10th and in 12th with scores of +20 (84, 80) and +22 (85, 81), respectively. Raina finished second among all competitors in birdies with four, just one behind UBC’s top overall finisher Kat Kennedy.
Fitzgerald was close behind her counterparts by finishing tied for 13th at +23 (83, 84) while Gargarella rounded out the Vikes’ scores at the Corban Spring Invitational tied for 19th at +32 (91, 85).
