Roller Derby: Hard Cores edged by Shipwrecks in back and forth battle

EOD Media

In what can only be described as a nail-biter, the Eves of Destruction’s Hard Cores were edged 196-194 by Nanaimo’s Harbour City Rollers Ship Rex Saturday night (May 13th) at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

Hard Cores Coach, The Frenzie, says playing a clean game was part of her team’s success:

“I think they played really well, without too many penalties. The blockers stayed focused on playing together as a unit and the jammers hustled their way around the track. The bench was pretty calm for the most part, which was impressive considering how tight the score was near the end. I'm so proud of how they played; they made my job easy-peasy.”

There were a few standout players on the Hard Cores, notably: Natural Disaster, who was named the team’s MVP Blocker; Shove Bug, who was awarded MVP Jammer; and Kourageous K, a Rotten Apples Junior Derby graduate, who played her first game as an official member of the adult league. Meanwhile, the Ship Rex’s standouts were Tina TurnerOver (MVP Blocker) and Hacksaw Reynolds (MVP Jammer).

The Hard Cores, now 1-1 on the season, next take on Pow! Town Roller Derby, on the road in Powell River, May 27th.

Your next opportunity to see roller derby in Victoria will be June 3rd: The Rotten Apples vs. Stone Cold Stellas and the Belles of the Brawl vs. The Sea to Sky Sirens. Tickets for the next double header event of 2017 are currently available online and at Ticket Rocket HQ (804 Broughton), with more vendors coming soon.

All 2017 events are family friendly (kids under 10 are free!), include a beer garden, halftime events, vendor village and TWO games full of hard hitting action!

The Eves of Destruction Roller Derby League was formed in 2006, has over 70 players, refs, and officials, and features five teams. Adult members play for The A-Team, The Belles of the Brawl, The Margarita Villains and The Hard Cores. The league also has a gender-inclusive junior team, The Rotten Apples, made up of players aged 10-18.
