The Reynolds Road Runners won the senior Boys’ AAA island soccer championships Thursday, wresting the Unwin trophy from the clutches of three-time champions Oak Bay Bays. The final score at Oak Bay’s home pitch score was 1-0.

Santi Calderon scored the only goal of the game at the very end of the first half. Sam Fletcher took a corners and Calderon made no mistake burying the ball.

Next up for the Road Runners are the provincial championships.

However, the two teams will play each other again on Tuesday at Braefoot; kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM in the Colonist Cup. Both teams will also advance to the provincials taking place in Burnaby, November, 24-26 at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West.

Earlier in the day, Oak Bay had defeated Nanaimo’s Dover Bay by the score of 3-1 to earn the berth to provincials; meanwhile Reynolds bested Nanaimo District by the score of 5-1.

The defending champions are St. Charles Best from Vancouver. Last year Reynolds finished fifth overall, while Oak Bay ended up ninth.
