PSA: Mayfair Optometric Clinic and HarbourCats team up for TEACHER OF THE MONTH recognition program, starting in October

Victoria HarbourCats players are student/athletes, and both the HarbourCats and Mayfair Optometric Clinicknow it's tough to read and be a student, let alone play a sport like baseball, if you can't see properly.

Mayfair Optometric Clinic, one of the great corporate supporters of the HarbourCats, is pleased to introduce the off-season TEACHER OF THE MONTH award, which starts in October and runs through May.

Any student or parent can nominate a great teacher to be the monthly winner, by sending an email indicating what makes that teacher so great – send to greatteachers@harbourcats.com. Each month, Mary Lou Newbold of Mayfair Optometric Clinic and Lori Swanson of the HarbourCats (a teacher in Victoria) will choose a winner, for recognition and a special prize pack.

As well, that teacher's class will attend the HarbourCats' 2018 SCHOOL SPIRIT GAME for FREE, thanks to Mayfair Optometric Clinic (date of the annual game to be announced when the WCL schedule is released by November at the latest).

"Education is the cornerstone of the blossoming careers of our players, and our program supports school students and youth baseball players, so this just makes a lot of sense to introduce a program like this," said Jim Swanson, Managing Partner of the HarbourCats.

The SCHOOL SPIRIT GAME, which has become a popular annual field trip for many schools in Victoria, provides an opportunity for students to see top collegiate baseball for just $5 per student, and a great June outing for teachers to introduce concepts of baseball that touch on science, math, communications, teamwork, history, and social studies.

"Dr. Stephen Taylor and our whole staff look forward to this game, and the energy of all the students at Royal Athletic Park as they cheer for the HarbourCats together that day," said Mary Lou Newbold, CEO of Mayfair Optometric Clinic. "We know that students perform better in class when their eyes are functioning properly, and regular, routine eye exams are an important part of that. One in four children diagnosed with learning issues are found to be misdiagnosed when corrective lenses are brought into play. Dr. Taylor and our staff work with students of all ages -- just like we are proud to work with the HarbourCats to bring our community together through the baseball games."
