PREVIEW: Vikes vie for first title in 12 years at U SPORTS Championship
For the first time since 2012 the UVic Vikes women's soccer team will get the opportunity to play at the highest level of Canadian university soccer when they compete at the U SPORTS National Championship tournament, hosted in Winnipeg, MB from Nov. 9-12.
First up for the Vikes is a quarter-final match against the Cape Breton Capers, taking place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9. Depending on the outcome of that game the Vikes could possibly be playing in a semifinal on Saturday, Nov. 11 or a consolation semifinal on Friday, Nov. 10.
The Vikes come into the tournament seeded fifth and will be taking on a Capers team that won the Atlantic University Sport Championship en route to being the fourth seed at the tournament.
Also competing are the RSEQ and defending National Champion Laval Rouge et Or, the Canada West Champion Trinity Western Spartans, The OUA Champion Guelph Gryphons, the RSEQ finalist Montréal Carabins, the host Manitoba Bisons and the OUA finalist Western Mustangs.
Both the Vikes and the Capers put up outstanding records throughout their respective regular seasons in 2017.
A 9-1-4 record with 26 goals for and just six against was good enough for the Vikes to finish third in the Canada West conference after their 14 regular season schedules.
The Capers meanwhile, absolutely dominated the AUS conference all season long. They went 11-0-1 on the season while compiling a ridiculous 50 goals for and allowing only four in their 12 game schedule.
Last Time Out
The Vikes punched their ticket to the U SPORTS Championship with a commanding 1-0 semifinal victory over the MacEwan Griffins. Third-year forward Kiara Kilbey scored the lone goal in the first half of the game as the Vikes defence once again battened down the hatches to weather any pressure that the Griffins put on them in the second half.
A 2-1 loss to the host Trinity Western Spartans in the Canada West Championship game prevented the Vikes from claiming their first conference title since 2008.
The Capers went a perfect 2-0 in their postseason run last weekend. The team defeated the University of New Brunswick 4-0 in the semifinal before squeaking past Acadia 2-1 in the final.
By the Numbers
10: The game promises to be a defensive duel with the two teams combining to allow just six goals in their 26 regular season games.
2: The Vikes have lost just twice all season with both defeats coming at the hands of Trinity Western in Langley, B.C.
3: The Capers had three members finish in the top four in scoring in the AUS. Keona Simmons had 12 goals, Ciera Disipio 11 and Tamara Brown 8.
